Notorious Baltimore criminal and underground figure Divine goes up against Connie and Raymond Marble, a sleazy married couple who make a passionate attempt to humiliate her and seize her tabloid-given title as "The Filthiest Person Alive". A Woman's Way (CTBC)

Sunday 17 October (7.45pm)

Greece   2009   1h 53m   Greek with English subtitles

Gritty melodrama about a relationship between an ex-con and a trans cabaret singer.

Just released from prison Yiorgos, who looks like a tough nut but dreams of squirrels, is searching for his long lost son. He meets Strella, a big-hearted trans prostitute who sings Maria Callas in cabaret bars and they begin sharing more than just their enjoyment of rewiring lamps. With campy dialogue, a fine cast of glamorous ladies, melodrama and plenty of sex, A Woman's Way is reminiscent of the films of Pedro Almodovar but with a generous pinch of Greek mythology thrown in for good measure. The two leads give excellent performances, creating characters one really cares about and will follow through any amount of dingy Athens locations as the plot twists and turns.

Wednesday 20 October (6.30pm)

Argentina/Spain/France   2009   1h 33m   Spanish with English subtitles

Summer marks a turning point for the young, rambunctious Jorgelina. Abandoned by her adolescent sister, she heads to the family's countryside estate with her recently separated father. On the vast sun-drenched pampas, Jorgelina reunites with her childhood playmate Mario, the proud but withdrawn son of a ranch hand who is training for his first village horse race. As their relationship develops over a languid summer of rural adventures, Jorgelina discovers that Mario is harbouring a secret even he does not fully understand. This delicate and uplifting coming-of-age drama, co-produced by Pedro Almodovar's company El Deseo, perfectly captures the breezy freedom of a pre-adolescent world. The young leads deliver captivating performances, especially non-actor Nicholas Treise who brings a phenomenal sensitivity to his portrayal of a gender-variant boy.

Prayers For Bobby (CTBC)

Sunday 24 October (3.00pm)

USA   2009   1h 32m   English

A tearjerker in the truest sense of the word, Prayers For Bobby is the rousing story of a suburban housewife forced to question everything she believes in when she discovers her 'perfect' son Bobby is gay. After Bobby tragically commits suicide, Mary (Weaver) calls her religious faith and own personal bigotries into question as she reassesses the values she once held so dear. Originally produced for US television, this adaptation of a true story is gloriously emotional stuff and boasts a soaring performance from Weaver at its core, who earned multiple award nominations for her role. An inspiring tale of a mother's love for her son, and a powerful critique of religion and homophobia.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with guest speakers.

Presented in association with the Metropolitan Community Church Scotland.

Tuesday 26 October (6.15pm)

UK   1992   1h 33m   English

Young nobleman Orlando is commanded by Queen Elizabeth I to stay forever young. Miraculously, he does just that. The film follows him as he moves through several centuries of British history, experiencing a variety of lives and relationships along the way, and even changing sex. Sally Potter's adaptation of Virginia Woolf's Orlando not only tells the story on film with brilliant visual design, but also tries to extend the plot as Woolf would have, had she lived to the end of the 20th century.
